Turning is a process that produces cylindrical products. The workpiece rotates in a chuck while a cutter removes material. There are several turning operations.
  • Parting - Parting is a process where a stock of material is cut into desired workpiece lengths.
  • Boring - Boring involves widening an existing hole. The hole may have been drilled or cast initially, and boring is a means for making holes more accurate in size, shape, and finish.
  • Facing - Facing is an operation whereby a flat surface is produced on the end of a workpiece.
  • Threading - Threading is often achieved by more cost effective means, but turning is a viable alternative when producing non standard thread sizes or other irregular features. Threading with this method achives more accurate thread geometry and concentricity.
Advanced Grinding and Machine has engine lathes, turret lathes, automatic lathes, and CNC (computer numerical control) lathes for use in turning processes. Typically, we process parts ranging from .06 inches to 54 inches in diameter, up to 8 feet long.

Key CNC Turning Features:

  • Chucking - provides concentric locations for multiple operations
  • Bar feeding - allows automation, leading to lower costs
  • Tooling - standard tooling available for round or polygon stock
